Trio of Westbury Stallions Feature in the Darley Plate2 Mar 2018
On the opening day of Auckland Cup Week three Westbury bred horses will start in the $100,000 Group 3 Darley Stallions Plate at Ellerslie Racecourse with Julius heading the field along with Passing Shot and Romancer.
Looking to continue Swiss Ace’s successful roll of late is Julius who scored his first stakes win last start at Ellerslie in the Concorde Handicap with fellow Westbury horse Romancer a narrow second.
Trained by John Bell, Julius was a late starter but the six-year-old gelding hasn’t wasted any time, winning five races, finishing second on three occasions and a third place from nine starts.
Carrying the number one saddlecloth tomorrow Julius will be ridden by Jason Waddell and has drawn barrier 7.
Swiss Ace will also be represented by Go Racing’s Passing Shot who will be looking to earn his fourth stakes race. He is a familiar runner at Ellerslie winning the Group 3 Mr Tiz Trophy and placed on a number of occasions including the Group 3 Bonecrusher Stakes and the Listed Newmarket Handicap.
Passing Shot will start from barrier 4 with Samantha Collect on board for trainer Stephen McKee.
Listed Mufhasa Stakes winner Romancer hopes to go one better on Auckland Cup Day after finishing a narrow second to Julius in the Group 3 Concorde Handicap on the Karaka Million night. From the Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs stable Romancer, sired by young up-and-coming Redwood, has won four races and finished in the money in nine of his 11 races.
Jockey Mark du Plessis has been booked to ride the Redwood gelding, starting from barrier 6.
