NZ St Leger Victory for Daytona Red19 Mar 2018
The Shaune Ritchie trained Daytona Red (Sebring) stamped himself as a promising stayer in the making when he came from last in the time-honoured Yealands Family Wines New Zealand St Leger (2500m), to race away for a comprehensive 2.75 length win over the hot favourite Felaar (Ekraar), with another form runner in Bizzwinkle (Rip Van Winkle) a further half-length back in third.
Scoring his third win from ten starts, Daytona Red was allowed to settle at the rear by Matthew Cameron and started to improve as the field made their way past the half way mark, with Felaar ‘getting on his back’ from the 1000m. Daytona Red continued to build his momentum under a strong ride from Cameron and really found a good kick over the final 600m which he ran in a tick under 34 seconds and outstayed.
A $75,000 Karaka purchase by his trainer, Daytona Red is raced by Mrs L A Cowley, R J de Lautour, G W Halse, J F & Mrs P Hirst, J McKittrick, C J, P J & Mrs S R Mitchell and races in Peter Mitchell’s famous colours worn by the great Bonecrusher.
Bred by Gerry Harvey, Daytona Red has been a work in progress and while he has always shown ability, he is only just starting to reach full maturity and realising his true potential. Unplaced in three trials as a two-year-old, Daytona Red was spelled and returned as a spring three-year-old winning two trials over 1150m. Presented to the races after his trial wins, it wasn’t until he stepped up in distance (2200m) at his fifth start that he showed his true form, coming from last to win at Ellerslie over 2200m in December, and then backing this up with another win in a $50,000 Special Conditions maiden on New Year’s Day over 2100m.
Daytona Red is out of the unraced Iglesia mare Move On Up and is the only foal from the mare after she died foaling the Sebring colt. Move On Up is out of the stakes winning Volksraad mare Ponte Piccolo, making Move On Up a half-sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year and Champion Miler Able Friend, while this is also the family of Big Barron, Global News, Altrista, Full At Last and Miss Mossman.
