Redwood Progeny Look to Step to Bigger Targets6 Apr 2018
Two very talented geldings by High Chaparral’s son Redwood will be looking to step into bigger black type targets when they step out this weekend.
The Chris Gibbs trained Romancer will step out in the $40,000 Team Wealleans over 1400m as he prepares for a his autumn goal of the $100,000 Easter Handicap over 1600m at Pukekohe in two weeks. Romancer flashed home for second in the Group 3 Concorde Handicap two starts back and ran home strongly again in the Darley Stallions Plate Gr.3 over 1200m behind Julius when they ran a very slick 1:08.32 and running the final 600m in 33.38. The 1400m of tomorrow’s race is sure to suit Romancer well.
Another son of Redwood looking to get to bigger goals is the Trent Busuttin/Natalie Young trained Rising Red who will be having his second start back from a long layoff due to injury when he heads to Bendigo tomorrow for the A$150,000 Golden Mile over 1600m. The 4YO gelding will need two scratchings to make the field but he showed he has lost none of his ability when resuming at Flemington recently.
An unlucky second in the 2017 NZ Derby won by Gingernuts, Rising Red (Redwood) suffered a tendon problem when aiming for the Rosehill Guineas and had 12 months on the sideline. Rising Red had his first run since his Group 1 placing in New Zealand when he lined up at Flemington recently over 1400m, and even though it was apparent that the 1400m would prove to be far short of his desired trip, the gelding ran very well when caught wide throughout and boxed on solidly to be beaten just 3 lengths.
