Two Gold Medals for Symon Wilde at Warrnambool4 May 2018
Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde had the time of his life this week winning five races on his home track during the famous Warrnambool Carnival, four of these coming on the final day and including the prestigious Brierly/Grand Annual Steeples double with the Gerry Harvey bred Gold Medals.
Gold Medals scored a great last stride victory over Zed Em in the Brierly Steeples over 3450m on Tuesday in the hands of Shane Jackson and Wilde then had to wrestle with the decision of whether to back up his eight-year-old gelding two days later in the A$350,000 Grand Annual Steeples on the final day or allow the horse time to recover from his Brierly win. Wilde was confident Gold Medals had “bounced” through his win and elected to back him up in the Grand Annual although a replacement rider would be needed with Jackson taking an earlier booking for King of the Forest who failed to complete the course.
Wilde turned to young rider Clayton Douglas who rides on the flat as well as over the fences to take the mount and the 23-year-old couldn’t have ridden a better judged race as he rode with the ‘patience of job’ saving ground over the final lap and not asking his horse for an effort until over the last fence. His old foe from Tuesday (Zed Em) looked like he had stolen a march turning in but Gold Medals set out after him resolutely and the two set down for a torrid battle as they bobbed head for head over the final 50m, Gold Medals having his head down when it counted.
A $30,000 yearling at Karaka in 2011, Gold Medals has won every season from two-year-old to eight-year-old and gone on to win 12 races and post a further 18 placings for A$725,000 in stakes. Looking back over his career this week becomes even more fitting as the Elvstroem made his debut at Warrnambool as a juvenile when winning over 1000m and here he is winning both the Brierly Steeples and Grand Annual Steeples six years later. In between time Gold Medals has won a further three times on the flat including a Terang Cup win and finished third in the Listed VRC Hilton Hotels Stakes at Flemington.
Gold Medals is the fourth live foal from the Encosta de Lago mare Lady Mulroy, who has since produced Family Way (Postponed) the winner of 3 races in Victoria, Intrepid Way (a city winner in Sydney), and 3YO Red Cloud who is a winner this season for Fraser Auret.
Lady Mulroy has an El Roca entered for the May Yearling Sale at Karaka next Monday and a weanling filly by Redwood.
