Sargent Looks To Country Cups With King Silver
Friday, Nov 20, 2009
Although the wait for King Silver (<W>) had taken some time, he now appears capable of going on to better things following his win in the Media Works Radio Rotorua Rating 70 over 2200 metres on Thursday.
Despite winning his Maiden over 2000 metres at the end of 2007, trainer John Sargent has exercised patience while he furnished physically during a couple of lengthy spells.
"He's taken a long time to mature and he's taken a while to come up in this campaign, but he can go on with it now and could be an ideal country cups horse", Sargent said.
The five-year-old Zerpour gelding had indicated when finding the line over 2100 metres at Paeroa last time that a win was beckoning, yet he almost ended up a travesty beaten on this occasion.
After trailing a soft pace throughout, King Silver became held up behind the tiring pacemaker when angling for the short 280 metre run home, and it was not until late in the piece that rider Mark Du Plessis was able to push him through between horses one off the fence before getting in the deciding strides.
His winning margin over second placed Dramatic Duchess was only a head, with the same distance to Ram's Dream in third, and a long head to Almuta Wawho fourth.
King Silver is owned by D G L Bennett, P G Didham, P J Finlay, G P Gardiner, W J Gleeson, P G Humphries, S T Morris, W N Preston & G B Sargent.
Sargent also trained his dam, Filament, who met with terrific success on the racetrack, combining a mixture of stamina and acceleration to win five times.
After winning three times over 2000 metres as a three-year-old, she finished second in the group three Adrian Knox Stakes before a fourth in the AJC Oaks and fifth in the Queensland Oaks.
As a four-year-old she returned to Queensland with a lead up win before her success in the St Leger over 2900 metres at Eagle Farm.
