Crack Mare Back In Business

John Sargent is confident Captain Rio's Gr 1 winning daughter Il Quello Veloce will make a return to her best form this preparation. The four-year-old is back in full work and the Matamata trainer is much happier with her condition this time around.

"Some mares don't quite come up in the early spring and she just wasn't right in the coat," Sargent said. Il Quello Veloce placed in two of her four starts and was turned out after finishing fourth in the Gr 3 Postponed Classic.

"She had three weeks off after that and she's come along really well," he said. "She'll be aimed at the Gr 1 Thorndon Mile and will have a couple of runs before that - she's a whole lot better now and really back to her old self."

A five-time winner, including the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes at two, Il Quello Veloce was bred and sold by Westbury and they will offer her full sister during the Premier Sale at Karaka next year. The stud's yearling draft will further include an O'Reiily colt out of Golden Sparkle. She is a sister to Nishaani, as is Parfore whose son Our Lukas has added to the family's black-type record with two stakes wins in Australia.
