Stakes Bid For Captain's Daughter

Robert Patterson will raise his sights with his promising three-year-old Topario after her effortless win at Trentham on Saturday. The New Plymouth trainer has confirmed a Gr 3 start next time out for the daughter of Captain Rio.

"She'll run in the Eulogy Stakes now and I'm confident she will be quite competitive against the better fillies," Patterson said. "She's improving all the time and she's got a great attitude and loves racing."

Topario, who was a runaway maiden winner at Hawera in October, went straight to the front at Trentham and lengthened stride comfortably in the straight to win by a length and a-quarter. "She was the class horse in the race and we rode her like that, but she doesn't have to lead," Patterson said. "There'll be a lot more pace on in the Eulogy and she's well capable of taking a sit off them."

The chestnut has also acted on all types of footing in her brief career to date. "She's won on heavy going and placed on good tracks," Patterson said. "She's always showed a stack of ability and won jump-outs as a two-year-old and it's just been a matter of her gaining some ringcraft."
