Mother-To-Be Wins Again
Wednesday, Jan 6, 2010
Motherhood obviously agrees with Mary's Book who continued her excellent run of form this preparation with a dominant victory at Ellerslie yesterday. The daughter of Pyrus was far too good for a competitive line-up of lower grade stayers and had a length and a-quarter to spare on her rivals at the post.
Pukekohe co-trainer Gareth McRae, who prepares the five-year-old with Garry Newham, said the Westbury Stud mare was in foal to Captain Rio and her future racing opportunities were limited. Mary's Book has made the most of her chances with two recent wins to her credit and four overall.
She is out of the winning Fiesta Star mare Outraging, who is a half-sister to the Australian stakes winner and Gr 2 performer Nassabidi. It is also the family of Gr 1 Blue Diamond winner Canonise.
Meanwhile, Captain Rio three-year-old Dr Dee Bee made an immediate impact on his southern debut when he was successful at yesterday's Timaru meeting. He had weighed in twice from three starts for Matamata trainers Roger James and Paul Mirabelli before transferring to Jan Hay's Ashburton stable.
A $30,000 Ready to Run Sale purchase, Dr Dee Bee is out of the winning Australian-bred Geiger Counter mare Count The Steps. He is a half-brother to the winners Watch My Step (Zerpour), Slipperywhenwet (Dayaan), Count Brose (Gold Brose), John's Girl (Gold Brose) and Donotdisturb (Zerpour).
