Close UpTarzino Trophy Day Arrives

Saturday signals the first day of spring and the first Group 1 of the new racing season with the running of the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy at Hawkes Bay. The field for the Tarzino sees a number of New Zealand’s best weight-for-age back at the track, and the presence of Group 1 winners Authentic Paddy, Close Up, Jon Snow, Melody Belle, Savvy Coup and Start Wondering is sure to make for an enthralling contest.

Tarzino Day at Hawkes Bay also coincides with the widely promoted Daffodil Day which will see six racedays in New Zealand associated with the Cancer Society this year as the nation looks to raise money for Cancer Research and to provide help for those suffering the disease. Cancer has no preference on who it affects and the Tarzino Trophy has been a prime example of this in recent years with former cancer sufferer Shelley Hale winning the race last year with Close Up and Hale will be represented again this year with Close Up and his half-brother Seventh Up, while South Island trainer Michael Pitman has been going through his own challenges with cancer of late and will line-up last year’s Champion 3YO Savvy Coup in the event.

This year‘s event is an open race with a number of chances outside the top tier of proven horses with the likes of Ocean Emperor, Sensible Princess, Scott Base, Hi Flyer, and Underthemoonlight all strong chances over the 1400m.

An addition to this year’s running will be a free service to Tarzino for the breeder of the winner valued at $15,000 + GST. Tarzino has his first foals being born in 2018 and the feedback from breeders at this time has been very encouraging around the progeny of the dual Group 1 winner.
