Livin’ On a Prayer Heads Redwood Trio in Taranaki Stakes12 Oct 2018
The talented Livin’ On a Prayer heads up a trio of Redwood mares who will tackle the Group 3 Taranaki Stakes at Hawera tomorrow. The three mares will all be looking to capture their first black type wins and each has more than a runner’s chance judging by their recent form. The race has rightfully attracted a strong line-up of fillies and mares for the 1400m event with Rosewood and Red Sierra joining Livin’ On a Prayer as quality mares set to battle against the likes of Nicoletta, Darscape Princess, Art Deco, Ruby Armani, Slimline, Yearn, Rayas, and Excelleration.
Livin’ On a Prayer had an excellent season last year and her form if anything has been even stronger this season, resuming with a close second to subsequent Group winner Te Akau Shark on the first day at Hawkes Bay, before scoring a hollow victory in the open sprint at Avondale a fortnight ago. The step to 1400m will hold no fears for the smart mare and providing the track does not deteriorate past a Dead 6 she should be the horse to beat from barrier 7.
However, should the track get out to a Slow surface or worse there is no doubt that Red Sierra and Rosewood will come into the race with strong hopes with both mares having been extremely consistent during the winter and early spring. The two mares last raced on 15 September when they met in a Group 3 over 1550m at Awapuni, Red Sierra finishing a good fourth and Rosewood eighth. Saturday’s journey of 1400m is sure to suit each of the Redwood mares well, while the track conditions will determine who will have the best chances.
The NZ TAB currently has Livin’ On a Prayer listed as a $4.60 favourite with Shaun McKay taking the reins, while Rosewood with Lisa Allpress back in the saddle is at a quote of $11, and Red Sierra in the hands of regular rider Charlotte O’Beirne is at $18.« Back
