More WonderMore Wonder Stepping up to Group 1 Challenge

The Westbury bred three-year-old More Wonder takes a big step when he lines up in Saturday’s NZ 2000 Guineas Gr.1 at Riccarton but taking a line through the Mossman colts form, it isn’t hard to make a case for the Team Rogerson trained gelding.

More Wonder raced 6 times as a two-year-old winning at Rotorua over 1215m where he beat Nirvana on Fire and Saturday’s favourite Madison County, while the son of Mossman never finished further back than fourth in his juvenile year around horses like Secret Allure, Stolen Gem, In a Twinkling, Rubira, and Ole Ole. More Wonder kicked off his three-year-old campaign in August with a somewhat inglorious performance, finishing last in a 3YO race at Te Rapa on what was regarded as a very indifferent track surface.

Given a brief spell after Te Rapa, More Wonder trialled at Cambridge in early October winning his heat impressively over the smart Princess Kereru before returning to the track at Rotorua on 20 October and finishing a very unlucky third to quality filly Media Sensation who has since won the Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie. Post his Rotorua run More Wonder backed up a week later at Trentham, and again had little luck having to go back from a wide draw and storming home to just miss, finishing a close second to the smart Princess Amelie.

More Wonder will be ridden for the first time by Sam Spratt on Saturday and the jockey is no stranger to success at Riccarton, enjoying an excellent time at this carnival last year when winning the NZ 1000 Guineas on Hasahalo and taking out the NZ Cup on Gobstopper.

More Wonder is the third foal of the Australian city winner Wonderworld (More Than Ready) who is a half-sister to Macau Horse of the Year Wonder Mossman and a grand-daughter of the Melbourne Cup winner Jezabeel. Wonderworld has a Tavistock colt heading to Karaka in January and is due to foal to Tarzino in 2018.
