Red Cloud Favoured in Chalmers Handicap7 Dec 2018
The Fraser Auret trained Red Cloud is strongly favoured to take his record to three wins from his past five starts when he steps out in a field of six in tomorrow’s $30,000 Fasttrack Insurance Chalmers Handicap at Trentham over 2500m.
A lightly raced son of Postponed, Red Cloud has shown good staying ability in his career to date and his pedigree suggests that he will have no trouble stepping up to 2500m with his half-brother Gold Medals (Elvstroem) being an accomplished middle distance performer and quality jumper, while another half-brother Chilled (Redoute’s Choice) winning up to 2100m. Out of the Encosta de Lago mare Lady Mulroy, Red Cloud has always given the indication that he would develop into a handy stayer and the patient policy applied by trainer Fraser Auret is starting to reap rewards.
Red Cloud was an impressive winner at his most recent start when coming from well back at Awapuni to reel in Hank Moody and Obrigado late in the piece posting a comfortable victory over 2100m, while the likelihood of a rain-affected track tomorrow should not hinder Red Cloud’s chances as he seems to be very versatile having won twice on a Good track and once on a Heavy track in the past. Red Cloud will be ridden by top Central Districts jockey Johnathan Parkes who has a very good rapport with the chestnut gelding having been aboard in five of his seven career starts, while the 54.5kg he is carded with tomorrow looks to be a luxury weight.
Named after former New Zealand Racing Conference Chairman, H.R. Chalmers, the H.R. Chalmers Handicap was first run in 1963 and for many a year was one of the more prestigious staying races on the New Zealand calendar. Lost for a period of time, the race was rejuvenated back in 2011 at its original distance of 3200m, and the 2018 running will see a distance change with the race coming back to 2500m.
Red Cloud is listed as a $2.80 favourite on the NZ TAB.
