Bella Mente MMBella Mente Provides El Roca with First Winner

The Shaune Ritchie trained two-year-old Bella Mente provided her sire El Roca with his first winner when she won the Paper Plus Matamata Juvenile over 1200m at Matamata on Sunday. Out of the Stravinsky mare Joiya, Bella Mente is a half-sister to the Group 1 placed Bella Gioia and the stakes winner Niki Piki Milo – while recent stakes winners Contessa Vanessa and Astor are both out of the immediate family.

Bred and owned by Marriott Thoroughbreds Ltd, Bella Mente is raced on lease by Marriott Thoroughbreds Ltd, J M Ewen, S J Wilcox, E Smith, P J Thompson, A P Ritchie, W J Bremner, B K Dell, L Heale & W Schoonderwoerd and she was given a lovely ride by Michael Coleman as she tracked the warm favourite Killin (Snitzel) into the straight and proved too strong for the colt over the final 200m, while the Gerry Harvey bred Rendition (Pierro) finished strongly for third at her first start and looked a winner at short notice.

Bella Mente’s sire El Roca has had a handful of runners to date with a number of trial winners in recent weeks, and like their sire (and his sire Fastnet Rock) the stock can be expected to make good headway as they mature further to three-year-olds and beyond.
