Sword in Stone Looking for Derby Ticket9 Feb 2019
Promising three-year-old Sword in Stone (Redwood) will be looking for a ticket to the $1,000,000 Vodafone NZ Derby at Te Rapa when he tackles the Warren Storm Lifebrokers Waikato Guineas Gr.2 over 2000m.
Trained by Lauren Brennan at Cambridge for Paul Hickman, Sword in Stone could not have been more impressive when coming from last to win over 1600m at Ellerslie on the 13 January at just his second start and the horse looks sure to appreciate the step to a middle distance today.
Sword in Stone made his debut at Te Rapa when finishing a brave second to Lite My Cigar after doing plenty of work in the run and while he is still a work in progress he has the makigns of a very good horse. Visiting jockey Michael Rodd will take the mount on the son of Redwood and there are few better riders of a staying horse than Rodd.
Sword in Stone was bred by DW Mayers and Mrs SJ Taylor, and while he is a half-brother to the sharp sprinter Secret Spirit (Swiss Ace), the 3YO has plenty of staying blood in his pedigree with dam Spirit of Sandford (by Kilimanjaro) a winner over 2000m and a full sister to Backup who was a winner to 2500m and stakes placed in the CJC Metropolitan Trophy Gr.3 and the MRC Manawatu Cup Gr.3, while the next dam was the outstanding stayer Daria’s Fun who set a track record when the WRC Wellington Cup Gr.1 for Sue Ellis.
