Reliable Man 3YO Nobu Set for Derby Assault1 Mar 2019
The Chris Waller trained Nobu has had a trouble free preparation heading into tomorrow’s $1,000,000 Vodafone NZ Derby and the 3YO son of Reliable Man looks sure to enjoy the 2400m of the Derby journey.
Nobu returned to racing on 5 December over 1400m at Warwick Farm where he ran home well for a good fourth and the horse has had five starts since where he has not finished further back than fourth and includes a win over 1900m at Warwick Farm when he stepped past 1600m for the first time. Sent to New Zealand three weeks ago with the Derby his target, Nobu missed out in a start in the Avondale Guineas two weeks ago and was forced to run in lower grade race on the same day at Ellerslie where he ran home strongly for fourth with the steadier of 59.5kg and giving weight to a number of older horses – a run which should have topped him off nicely for the Derby.
International jockey Pat Cosgrave will make his first appearance in New Zealand when comes from Dubai to combine with Nobu, and the northern Irishman is best remembered downunder when he rode a Group 1 double at Caulfield last year on the Godolphin pair of Benbatl in the Caulfield Stakes and Best Solution in the Caulfield Cup. Cosgrave has ridden for Waller previously and got the call up to ride Nobu on Saturday.
Nobu is listed as a $23 shot with the NZ TAB but he will be running home strongly at the business end.
