Night’s Watch Takes on Star-studded Field in Australian Cup8 Mar 2019
Redwood’s talented son Night’s Watch will take on a quality field when he lines up in Saturday’s A$1.5 million TAB Australian Cup over 2000m at Flemington, a race which sees two Melbourne Cup victors entered, alongside the winners of the VRC Derby, LKS Mackinnon Stakes, Moonee Valley Gold Cup, Australian Cup, Peter Young Stakes, Sandown Classic, Ebor Handicap, Sandown Cup, and Empire Rose Stakes.
Night’s Watch has had two starts since resuming from a spell – both from his “new” stable of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace – where he put up strong performances in both the Carlyon Cup Gr.3 and Peter Young Stakes Gr.2, each of these races won by Avilius who is sure to be his toughest opponent tomorrow. Avilius has been in career best form since arriving in Australia for the Godolphin team where he has won six of his eight starts – his only defeats coming when fourth in the WS Cox Plate behind Winx, and when his chances were eliminated in the Melbourne Cup.
Night’s Watch will need to be in career best form to turn the tables on Avilius but as we know, it is a horse race, and the horse with the best run and an ounce of luck will be the hardest to beat. Among the opposition for Night’s Watch are former Melbourne Cup winners Almandin and Rekindling, while Ace High has a superb record on the track and over the distance, Harlem is a previous winner of Australian Cup and Trap For Fools and Shillelagh are Group 1 winners on the track.
There is no doubt that Avilius will start a hot favourite with Hugh Bowman in the saddle and draw perfectly in barrier 1, but Night’s Watch shouldn’t get too far out of his ground from barrier 7 and the 2000m, (third up from a spell) should be right up his alley.« Back
