Bella Mente MMEl Roca Two-year-olds Shaping Up Well

Fastnet Rock’s son El Roca is making a great start to his stud career with his first two-year-olds appearing on the racetracks and showing excellent form.

Promising filly Bella Mente provided El Roca with his first winner, and this week his daughter First Rock became his second winner when clearing out to win easily at Matamata. First Rock was the first runner for El Roca early in the season when she was narrowly beaten at Whanganui and has now had five starts for a win and three seconds.

Bella Mente was a winner at her second start in February and was a brave fourth to Aretha in the Group 2 J Swap Matamata Breeder’s Stakes at the third appearance. Bella Mente will head to the Manawatu Sire’s Produce Stakes Gr.1 as her last appearance at two and should return as a much stronger version in her three-year-old season.

Another of the El Roca progeny to have excelled is the Danica Guy trained colt Moeraki who was Group 3 placed behind Your Deel in the Waikato Stud Slipper and is another who will develop into a quality three-year-old.

El Roca never raced as a two-year-old and came out as an August 3YO where he won impressively at Taupo beating subsequent Group 1 winner Atlante. El Roca went on to win a Listed race at his second start and was an unlucky sixth in the Caulfield Guineas Gr.1 at just his fourth start.

Returning to Australia in the Autumn, El Roca won the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (beating Horse of the Year Dissident) and was narrowly beaten in the Randwick Guineas (by Dissident) and the Liverpool City Cup (by Terravista) as well as finishing third in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes. El Roca headed the NZ 3YO Free Handicap (1200-1600) and is a three-quarter brother to Champion Australian Sprinter Redzel.
