Rock on Wood Salutes in Anzac Mile26 Apr 2019
Redwood gelding Rock on Wood put up a superlative performance to give Group 1 winner Shadow’s Cast (Per Incanto) many lengths at the 200m mark only to reel in the topliner short of the line and post his first black type victory for part-owner and trainer Leanne Elliot.
Raced by Leanne Elliot along with Mrs J Ker & Y J Ker, Rock on Wood has been an exciting prospect from the first time he set foot on a racecourse and his record of 5 wins from 9 starts and two fourth placings in Group company has seen many an offer tabled for the impressive looking four-year-old, but the connections have remained solid and preferred to race the horse on and are being duly rewarded for their patience.
Rock on Wood became the 11th black type performer for his sire when winning the Listed Manawatu ITM Anzac Mile and as many predicted before yesterday, he looks a Group 1 horse in the making. Ridden by Ryan Elliot – son of the trainer Leanne Elliot – Rock on Wood was allowed to settle behind early, midfield albeit three wide from a wide barrier, but worked a touch closer nearing the turn to look a distinct danger. Second favourite and topweight Shadow’s Cast found a good kick at the 300m and look to have the race in safe keeping until Rock on Wood started to get through his gears, rushing home late to grab victory in the last few strides.
Bred by J C O'Sullivan, P J Rudkin, K W Tabernacle, Ms A J White & Est late B A Skelton, Rock on Wood is out of the Catcher in the Rye mare Rock on Rye and comes from the same family which produced Starcent, Sacred Star, Embellish, Diademe, Sportsman, Prisoner of Love and King of Prussia. Rock on Rye has a yearling brother to Rock on Wood, and is currently infoal to Redwood.« Back
